Eligibility Criteria

Subject to the conditions stipulated in these Directives, the following persons eligible to seek admission to the Ph.D. programme

  • The Candidates shall have passed Master’s degree or Professional Degree or Full time Diploma declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding Statutory / Regulatory / Apex body, of Universities which are recognized by UGC with at-least 55% marks in aggregate of all years / all semesters or its equivalent CGPA grade ‘B+’ in the UGC 10 – Points scale or an equivalent CGPA grade in a other points scale wherever grading system is followed. OR
  • The Candidates shall have passed Master’s Degree by Research of Universities which are recognized by UGC as equivalent there-to with at-least 55% marks in aggregate of all years / all semesters or its equivalent CGPA grade ‘B+’ in the UGC 10 – Points scale or an equivalent CGPA grade in a points scale wherever grading system is followed.
  • A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of CGPA grade, may be allowed for those;
    • Belonging to SC/ST/VJNT/SBC/OBC category (of the Maharashtra State).
    • Belonging to differently-abled persons with more than 40% disability.
    • Who had obtained their Master’s degree prior to 19th September, 1991.
    • Other categories as per the decisions of the UGC, from time to time.
  • However, the required proof to support such relaxation like Disability certificate by competent authority / Civil Surgeon, Caste Certificate, Non Creamy Layer Certificate, wherever applicable, Master’s degree certificate, etc., issued by Competent Authority is required to be produced at the time of admission / PET.
  • The candidates with professional degrees governed / regulated by AICTE / COA / BCI are also required to produce the Caste Validity Certificate at the time of admission / PET.
  • The Candidate needs to compulsorily appear in the PET of the subject in which they desire to pursue their Ph.D. degree.
  • The Candidate desirous to pursue a Ph.D. degree in a Subject / Faculty other than the degree of their post-graduation need to clear the aptitude test conducted by the relevant University Department / Research Centre before applying for PET.
  • The Candidates will also be provisionally allowed to appear for PET Entrance Test, provided:
    • The Candidates who have appeared for the final year / final semester examination of the Master’s Degree program of the concerned faculty and result of such candidate is awaited.
    • The Candidates who have applied for the revaluation after he / she was declared unsuccessful in the final year / final semester or any examination of the Master’s Degree program due to which the result of Master’s degree is kept on hold and also the revaluation result of such candidate is awaited.
  • The Entrance Test Result of such provisionally admitted Candidates will not be declared unless he / she provides the certificate, that he / she secures the required marks for being declared eligible for Entrance Test (PET).

Pre-Enterance Test (PET)

  1. The PET shall be conducted subject-wise for pre-declared subjects for Ph.D. admissions The details of the test such as syllabus for day and date, venue and time, etc., shall be declared by the University advance. The syllabus of the PET shall consist of 50% based on rese methodology and 50% shall be subject specific.
  2. The University may conduct the PET only for the subjects where there are vacancies to be filled.
  3. The PET shall be conducted at the centre(s) to be notified in advance. Changes of centres, if any, shall also be notified well in advance.
  4. The PET should be conducted by the University normally within three months of the date of beginning of the academic year.
  5. The validity of the PET result for taking admission for M.Phil/Ph.D. programme shall be for three years from the declaration of the respective result.
  6. The candidate seeking admission to a Ph.D. programme in a subject other than the subject in which he/she has obtained the Master’s degree shall take the PET in the subject in which he/she has obtained Master’s degree and clear an Aptitude Test in the subject in which he/she is seeking admission, specially designed and conducted by the Research Centre where he/she is seeking admission; Provided that both the subjects are from the same faculty.
  7. For the candidate seeking admission to a Ph.D. programme in a subject of a faculty other than the faculty in which he/she has obtained the Master's degree, the rules of change in faculty shall be applicable.
  8. The PET should be conducted in ónlihe mode in controlled environment and the candidates will not be allowed to take the test from a location other than those specified by the University.

Admission Process

Step
1

All admissions for Ph.D. programmes shall be through an Entrance Test (PET) conducted by the University and the Interviews conducted by the Research Centres.

The University shall notify on an annual basis a predetermined and manageable number of vacant seats of Ph.D., depending on the number of available research guides, prescribed quota at the centres, and academic and physical facilities available, keeping in mind the norms regarding the scholar-teacher ratio.

The University shall notify well in advance on its website and through advertisement in at least two national newspapers, of which at least one shall be a Marathi newspaper, the pròcedure of admission to the Ph.D. programmes. The details notified shall include the number of seats vacant, subject/discipline-wise distribution of vacant seats, criteria for admission, procedure for admission, examination centre(s) where entrance test(s) shall be conducted and all other relevant information for the benefit of the candidates.

The admissions shall be based on the criteria notified by thé University, keeping in view the guidelines/norms in this regard issued by the UGC and other statutory bodies concerned, and taking into account the reservation policy of the Central/State Government prescribed from time to time

Program Duration

Duration of Ph.D. programme shall be a period from the date of admission to the programme to the date of submission of thesis for the degree. :

  1. Ph.D. programme shall be of a minimum duration of three years and a maximum of six years from the date of admission, including course work; Provided that the candidate has spent at least one year after registration.
  2. Provided further that the minimum period shall be two years from admission for candidates who have pursued Ph.D. after Master’s d research and registers for PhD in thé same subject.
  3. Extension up to a maximum period of two semesters/one year for M. Phil. and a maximum period of four semesters/two years for Ph.D. shall be given by the Research and Recognition Committee (RRC) concerned on the recommendation of the Guide and the respective Research Advisory Committee (RAC). The candidate concerned shall submit the application in prescribed format for extension through his/her Research Guide and Head of the Research Centre three months prior to the expiry of the registration period. Further extension to the PhD. tenure, for not more than two years, may be granted only by the Vice- Chancellor on case to case basis. Provided fhaf no candidate shall be permitted to extend the duration of PhD programme beyond TEN years from the date of admission, and after this period the registration of the candidate shall be deemed to have ceased.
  4. Women candidates and persons with disability (more than 40% disability) may be allowed an additional relaxation of one year for M.Phil. and two years for Ph.D. in the maximum duration. In addition, women candidates may be provided Maternity Leave once in the entire duration of M. Phil. Ph.D. for up to 240 days.

Important Instructions

  • The Pre-Admission form can be filled only online as per schedule.
  • Candidates will need to refer their qualifying examination marks sheet (year of passing, percentage, Board etc.) while filling the Pre-Admission form.
  • Personal Details: Candidates are supposed to fill all the personal information as stated in the form.
  • All the mandatory fields in the online Pre-Admission form are required to be filled before clicking on the submit button. The information furnished by the candidate will be treated as final and no subsequent changes will be allowed.
  • Candidates are required to pay processing fee Online (Rs. 1000 /-).
  • Please note, that your Pre-Admission forms will not be considered for the merit list unless the payment of processing fees.
  • On successfully submitting the online Pre-Admission form, an acknowledgement with “Online application no” is automatically generated. Candidates are requested to take a print (2 copies) of the same.
  • At the start page of every form, candidates are asked to enter their Email Id and password to register them for the account. A unique user id is generated and displayed. Please save this user id and the entered password carefully, as it will allow you to access your account, you can also use your Email ID and password. Using this account, you can also submit Pre-Admission forms for other courses offered at institutes at Somaiya Vidyavihar, your personal data will be entered automatically. The account also allows you to reprint acknowledgment slips for Pre Admission forms submitted by you.
