Volunteer’s Abode - Improving Community Service with a Graph-based Recommender System
- Abstract
In the recent years, awareness for community service events is created via popular social media applications, such as Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn, that are frequently used by most individuals. This has aided NGOs over the years in carrying out their mission of serving the community. However, these platforms also cater to entrepreneurs, businesses and the like to promote their presence on social media and attract users to their products and services. Consequently, the use of interest based recommendation systems for end users in social media applications are common. With the use of smart strategies, one can easily reach out to multiple users across platforms and countries. However, it is likely that non-profit organizations may not have access to such resources and that their social media presence is not acknowledged as much, leading to such organizations losing out on quality volunteers and individuals. Our proposed solution aims to reduce this gap between NGOs and individuals by introducing a separate platform called ”Volunteer’s Abode” that makes use of a graph-based recommendation system mapping quality volunteers to NGOs. It maps relationships between volunteer’s interests with an NGO’s area of work to provide recommendations that encourage volunteers to actively participate.
