Examining Intention to Embrace Sustainable Menstrual Products: A cross-cultural study

  • From July 2024

  • Project Status: On-Going

Menstruation, a biological process experienced by women, has been a taboo topic in most societies till date. This taboo has resulted in limited discussions around menstrual products and its impact in popular media or academic literature. Rapid urbanization and promotion by few companies resulted in women beginning to use convenient menstrual products without checking its impact on their own health and the environment as a whole.

Disposable non-biodegradable sanitary waste is a problem globally. Every year, nearly 150 kgs of nonbiodegradable menstrual waste is disposed of by every menstruating woman.( World Bank Report on Menstrual Health & Hygiene, 2022). There are approximately 800 million menstruating women worldwide daily. Information, education, and access to sustainable quality menstrual products, along with a focus on improving the management and disposal, have been recommended by the World Bank for good menstrual hygiene and health.

Hence this project assesses:

  • To examine consumer intentions to adopt Sustainable menstrual products (SMPs)
  • Comparison of willingness to adopt SMPs across countries. 3-5 countries will be selected basis sustainable development index ranking and global social progress index ranking

The rationale for choosing this topic is to nudge policymakers and entrepreneurs towards understanding the issues that restrict women from using SMPs and address the SDG goals

  • 3 (Good health and Well Being)
  • 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation)
  • 11 (Sustainable cities and communities)
  • 12 (Responsible consumption & production)
